Chewing and smiling (showing our teeth) are the two most important things a set of teeth can provide someone. Missing teeth can create functional, esthetic, and even social obstacles. Restoring these missing areas of teeth will not only allow you to regain your function to help you chew and speak properly, it will also contribute to self-confidence and allow you to smile.
Complete Dentures are a treatment option for those who do not have any teeth on either the top or bottom arch or both arches of teeth. A full set of dentures is necessary if all the teeth have been extracted or removed due to dental disease. A complete set of dentures will help preserve the chewing capacity and aid in esthetics not only by improving a smile with a set of teeth, but also by providing support for the lips and cheeks. There will be an adjustment period for patients who decide to have full dentures fabricated (and this is why we highly recommend that patients seek out a dental implant supported denture).
Partial dentures are for those who have maintained some healthy teeth and would like to fill in the missing areas. The natural teeth are used as anchors or support for the partial denture prosthesis. A partial denture can be for an upper, lower, or both arches of teeth and can consist of chrome metal structure (for strength and resistance to wear) and acrylic (to mimic the gums).
In many cases complete dentures and even partial dentures are not satisfactory enough to a patient who is used to the "feeling" of his or her natural teeth. Even though nothing surpasses the benefits of a natural tooth, an implant retained denture is the next best thing to restoring an array of missing teeth. Dental implants create a substructure foundation that allows a full or partial denture to gain stability and allowing for a more comfortable feel and bite for the patient. The implant retained denture is an especially a great option for those who do not feel like their current denture is satisfactory. For more information please read our Dental Implants section.
